A Blog Scrutinized - TechZilo

TechZilo was the top commentator this month so here is the blog review of TechZilo.com

TechZilo

TechZilo is actually a blog authored by a 15 year old. I have been reading TechZilo for a few months and it doesn’t seem like it is written by a 15 year old, the writing seems much older. Sumesh, the “founder” of TechZilo was one of the first to link to Blog Scrutiny. The link came when I commented on a post done by Sumesh called Alternatives to Related Entries plugin by Wasabi, I noted another alternative. He then asked me if I would do a review of it and he would link to me. The post I wrote about it was Semiologic Terms2Post - Related Entries Plugin. Now let’s get to the scrutinizing.

Likes:

  1. Great content, I believe currently Sumesh is on vacation but there is usually a fairly steady stream of quality posts.
  2. I love the About page on this blog, it lays everything out there talking about how Sumesh got interested in computers and a little history of the blog.
  3. I like the fact that he uses strikethrough when making corrections, this lets everyone know what the original post was without making him look like too much of a dork.
  4. No ads on the site, there is nothing wrong with ads but it is refreshing to see that this blogger isn’t just out to make a quick buck (not that it is that easy to make a quick buck with blogging, your better off making a quick buck from a minimum wage job).

Dislikes:

  1. I’m not a big fan of the theme on this blog, it makes me feel like I’m in a dream sequence form an early 90’s TV show.
  2. Sumesh is doing one of those, link to me and I’ll link to you pages, not really terrible, but terribly cliche. (by the way TechZilo - Tech from a teen’s tech side)
  3. Sumesh is on vacation!! I know that isn’t something that should really be in the dislikes but I just have to point out that the frequency of updates isn’t up to the point I would like it to be (mostly because I get frustrated when I don’t have anything interesting to read).

Suggested Posts:

  1. Is Google becoming the next Technorati?
  2. Top 12 Mozilla Firefox add-ons for web designers
  3. What is Google Juice?
  4. Bring back Show Desktop icon

TechZilo, I read it everyday, that its updated, and why don’t you?
It is the last day in August but next month is a new month, would you like your blog reviewed on Blog Scrutiny? If so just be the top commentator, remember I will delete your comments if they are not relevant so be a good commentator and add to the conversation.

A Blog Scrutinized - Kyle’s Cove dot Com

Kyle’s Cove dot Com

On Kyle’s Cove dot Com, Kyle Eslick gives his thoughts on technology, blogging, WordPress, SEO, and making money online. Sounds interesting, let’s move onto the regular blog review format, Likes, Dislikes and an addition, suggested posts.

Likes:

  1. Original and interesting posts that I don’t see anywhere else (some examples listed under my favorite posts)
  2. A great about page. Sounds really stupid but it fascinates me how many blogs don’t have a good about page telling you what the blog is about and most importantly who is writing it.
  3. Lively comments. A lot of readers voicing there opinions on each post.
  4. The blog has everything that most blog tips sites tell you to have.

Dislikes:

  1. Too many ads, I know you like to make money but it wouldn’t hurt to cut down a little bit or even add a 3rd column to spread things out a bit.
  2. Another note on the ads, please get rid of Kontera. I personally don’t think that anyone should use kontera, it is just too obtrusive.
  3. Why do you need a completely seperate page for your blogroll? oh, yea, its because you have so many things in your sidebar (TOO MANY).

And finally the addition to the blog review format:

Suggested Posts:

  1. R.I.P. Technorati
  2. Blogging Tip: How Many Posts is Too Many?
  3. How Safe Is Facebook?

So there you have it, Kyle’s Cove dot Com. I read it every day and hope you do as well. Keep it simple and just subscribe to Kyle’s RSS feed.

A Blog Scrutinized - Slyvisions

Slyvisions

I’ll be honest with all of you readers right up front, I’m writing this review mostly because of its “Get a Free Backlink” page which I think is a great policy to have. Slyvisions is a place for online tips. The about page explains that Sly Blanco (the author) is just a student and that blogging is something “ANYBODY can and should do.” Although I agree with that statement I am legally bound to saying that it is silly (not really I just though it was an interesting thing to say).

One thing I want to say before I get on with the usual “things I like and things I don’t” segment of the review, Sly is trying to raise money for a MacBook Pro, you can see on his about page though that he has only had $5 donated towards it, that is just plain sad. I would tell you to go donate but wouldn’t you rather buy something on amazon.com?

Things I like:

  1. Good looking and simple theme (sounds stupid but first impressions count, he even says so)
  2. Great about page and contact page (I’m digging deep)
  3. The “10 Things To Do When You Have Nothing Else To Blog About” post

Onto dislikes:

  1. GET RID OFF ALL THE ADS! there are waaaaaayyy too many on each page, it is extremely annoying.
  2. Why would you ever make a “Webmaster tools” page? especially when the blog is about online tips. This may warrant a post but it shouldn’t get its own page!
  3. Why would you ever make a “Make money” page” especially when the blog is about online tips. This may warrant a post but it shouldn’t get its own page! (is it just me or did he make the same mistake twice)
  4. There are TWO count them TWO “add this blog to my technorati favorites” button

So that is about it, I think the content on the blog is actually pretty good but the blog does have room for improvement.

A Blog Scrutinized - jon lee dot see eh

Web Development Blog jon lee dot see eh is an interesting blog where Jon Lee, who has run websites since he was 12, writes about web development.

lets get onto a list of things I like and a list of things I dislike.

Likes:

  1. The blogs has the Do Follow plugin installed which means when you comment on the blog it is counted towards the link count to your blog when Google crawls jonlee.ca.
  2. Seems to have a regular posting schedule which, from what I can tell, is one post per day.
  3. Great quality posts including a great post about how everyone can work for Google.
  4. Top commentators plugin, which means that if you are one of the top commentators you can get a link to your blog or webpage increasing page rank.
  5. The blog is available in several languages.

Now on to dislikes:

  1.  For a web development blog I would think that there were more posts about web development not things like MSN censoring IM’s or a review of a pair of headphones.
  2. I hate the theme for this blog it is too skinny and there are too many widgets in the sidebar.
  3. Too much self promoting why does there have to be a link to his RSS feed at the end of every post when there is already a link to it in the sidebar, slighty redundant I do believe.

I guess I only have 3 things I don’t like about this blog which is unusual because usually I can come up with a lot more. This time I can’t.

The First To Be Scrutinized - Blog About Your Blog

Blog About Your Blog is an interesting blog where many bloggers come together to write about blogging.

“We at Blog about your Blog are about quality. Quality blogs, quality bloggers, and quality people.

Blog about your Blog (BAYB) is a place for good quality bloggers to come together and collaborate on one big project. We have bloggers from all over the world, blogging about a variety of topics.”

Quality bloggers, alright, who blogs here?

I think I have read a couple of these bloggers blogs but I don’t remember them very well. Although this is a long list, only a few of them have seemed to contribute a significant amount of posts.
